PR Curling League General News

The PRCL is an all-inclusive league open to gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans-gendered and yes, even straight, curlers of all skill levels. New members are encouraged and welcome to join this social/recreational league. A good overview of the game is available.

At the beginning of the curling season, the teams are randomly divided into 5 divisions for the first round of play, then separated into 5 points-based divisions for the subsequent rounds. As a result, the more experienced competitive teams play against each other and the more recreationally-focused teams play against each other. Everyone has fun under the unifying banner of the Pac Rim.

Four events are hosted each year. The first is the Annual Registration which is held in early September in downtown Vancouver. As well as registering, paying dues, etc, the members have the opportunity to meet and greet each other in a totally social locale. The second event is a small one-day funspiel called the Pink Broom. It is held each year in the autumn, and provides an excellent opportunity for new members to meet other members, and to curl with different people. The third event is the PAC RIM CUP, held every year in late January. This January will be the 26th year that the PRCL has held a bonspiel, and it is expected that GLBT curling teams from across Canada and the United States will once again participate. The final event is the season Wind-Up Event. At the Wind-Up, prizes are awarded, the annual general meeting is held, and a banquet feast is served. See the events section for further information.

Curling takes place at the Vancouver Curling Club on Sunday afternoons and Monday evenings.

After the 2012 Winter Games, the PRCL will be moving with the VCC to a new facility created as an Olympic legacy. The new facility will have 8 sheets of ice so who knows? Click here for the latest information on the construction and conversion of the new legacy facility. Perhaps it will be a time for further growth and expansion of the PRCL. Here are drawings of how the new facility will look after the Olympic games:
